What happened: The Midland ISD Board of Trustees met Aug. 12 for a special meeting to rename Legacy High School and Legacy Freshman High School to Midland Lee High School and Midland Lee Freshman High School, starting in the 2026-27 school year.

Why it matters: The change follows weeks of public debate over the Lee name, which was dropped in 2020. Supporters cited alumni tradition, while opponents pointed to the absence of any link to improving student outcomes.

The big picture: Forty-six people spoke during the public forum. About 87% opposed reverting to the Lee name, while 13%  supported it.

  • Opponents said the Lee name was purposefully chosen in 1961 during resistance to school desegregation efforts. They warned the change diverts board attention from improving student outcomes and stressed that existing students identify as Legacy Rebels.

  • Supporters pointed to 63 years of school and alumni tradition. They cited a Midland Reporter Telegram poll showing 75% community support, and argued for preserving heritage while removing “Robert E.” from the name.

Go deeper: Trustees Brandon Hodges, Josh Guinn, AngelHernandez, and Matt Friez voted in favor. Trustees Tommy Bishop, Michael Booker, and Sara Burleson opposed. Hodges said the name complies with board policy that allows “other names deemed appropriate by the board.” By dropping “Robert E.” and keeping only “Lee,” the board sidestepped the policy’s ban on namesakes who fought against the United States.

Friez asked staff to implement the change without increasing the budget. Staff estimated $35,000–$62,000 in costs for current campuses. Superintendent Stephanie Howard noted they can remove many items without replacement, and donations can cover necessary changes. Branding for the new school will be part of the 2023 bond budget.

What’s next: The change takes effect in 2026 at current campuses, then transitions to the new campus when it opens in 2028.
