Rangers rebound to go 2–1 at Canyon tournament
What happened: Greenwood went 2–1 at the Canyon Tatum Tough Tournament from Monday, Dec. 29, through Wednesday, Dec. 31. The Rangers started with a tough loss against Canyon (16-4 overall) but bounced back with wins over Canadian (6-3 overall) and Bushland (7-6 overall). Greenwood moved to 12–7 overall following the tournament.
The big picture:
- Game 1: Canyon 77, Greenwood 41
Canyon set the tone, opening the game with a 3-pointer. Greenwood answered at the free-throw line and stayed within a possession through the middle of the first quarter, but Canyon closed the period with a late push to take an 18–11 lead. Greenwood briefly cut into the margin in the second quarter, but Canyon continued to answer, carrying a 41–24 advantage into halftime.
The Rangers found offense in spurts in the third but were unable to slow Canyon’s pace, as the Eagles pushed the lead to 57–35 entering the fourth and continued to pull away down the stretch. Clayton Wilcox led Canyon with 19 points, Jordan Webber with 15, and Hansen Williamson with 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Greenwood’s Jonathan Mendoza also added three 3-pointers.
- Game 2: Greenwood 65, Canadian 52
Greenwood jumped in front early, opening the game with back-to-back 3-pointers and building a 16–10 lead late in the first quarter. Canadian answered before the break, but Greenwood closed the period ahead 16–10 and extended the margin early in the second. Canadian stayed within reach at the free-throw line and briefly pulled even late in the half, but Greenwood carried a 23–21 lead into halftime.
The game turned in the third quarter as Greenwood strung together consecutive 3-pointers and finishes in the lane, entering the fourth ahead 47–36. Canadian attempted to answer, but Greenwood maintained separation. Colton Rauman led Greenwood with 18 points and Jonathan Mendoza with 16, both knocking down four 3-pointers, while Austin Snodgrass added 13. Riggs Pennington led Canadian with 14 points.
- Game 3: Greenwood 46, Bushland 38
Greenwood opened the game with three first-quarter 3-pointers to build a 16–9 lead after one. Bushland answered with interior scoring and stayed within reach through the second quarter, but Greenwood responded with timely buckets and carried a 23–18 advantage into halftime.
Momentum shifted after the break as Greenwood steadily extended the margin in the third, with Rauman scoring inside and out to push the lead to 33–21 entering the fourth. Bushland made repeated trips to the free-throw line late, but Greenwood continued to answer, closing out the 46–38 win. Colton Rauman led Greenwood with 13 points, and Austin Snodgrass with 10. Jenner King led Bushland with 15 points.
