Lady Mustangs finish 4–1, claim consolation crown at Caprock

What happened: Midland Christian went 4–1 at the Lubbock Caprock Classic, finishing as Consolation Champions to improve their overall record to 15–6. The Lady Mustangs opened tournament play Monday, Dec. 29, with a narrow loss to Lubbock Estacado (8–12 overall), then rebounded with wins over Moore (2–5 overall), Canutillo (11–7 overall), and Plainview (11–10 overall).
They closed the tournament with a dramatic double-overtime victory over Frenship Memorial (16–7 overall).
The big picture:
- Game 1: Lubbock Estacado 42, Midland Christian 41
Midland Christian fell in a tight opener, leading 9–5 after the first quarter and trailing 15–12 at halftime. The Lady Mustangs stayed within reach throughout the second half, entering the fourth quarter down two before Estacado held on for a one-point win. Danali Perez led Estacado with 13 points, while Jordan Stokes led Midland Christian with 11.
- Game 2: Midland Christian 61, Moore 44
The Lady Mustangs bounced back in the consolation bracket after a tightly contested first three quarters. Midland Christian led 19–15 after the first and held a slim 32–31 advantage at halftime before carrying a 43–41 lead into the fourth. The Lady Mustangs then pulled away down the stretch, outscoring Moore 18–3 in the final quarter.
Mallory West and Selah Fox led Midland Christian with 13 points each, with Fox knocking down three 3-pointers. Jordan Stokes and Jordyn Hamilton added 11 apiece. The Lady Mustangs made 22 of 25 free throws, a season high. Michelle Anom led Moore with 15 points, followed by Garnet Hale with 10.
- Game 3: Midland Christian 52, Canutillo 22
Midland Christian built a 12–3 lead after the first quarter and extended the margin to 27–7 by halftime. The Lady Mustangs continued to separate in the third, pushing the lead to 41–18 before closing out the 30-point win. Selah Fox led Midland Christian with 12 points, including four 3-pointers. Jordyn Hamilton and Addi Tatsch added 10 points each. Canutillo was led by Liyara Wilkes with 14 points.
- Game 4: Midland Christian 46, Plainview 28
Midland Christian was locked in a tight battle early, tied 8–8 after the first quarter and holding a slim 15–13 lead at halftime. The Lady Mustangs created separation in the third quarter, pushing the advantage to 30–22, then extended the margin in the fourth to secure the win and advance to the consolation championship game.
Lauren Alvizo and Selah Fox led Midland Christian with 12 points each, with Fox knocking down four 3-pointers. Plainview was led by Ailey Kerbo with 10 points.
- Game 5: Midland Christian 42, Frenship Memorial 33 (2OT)
In an emotional finish, Midland Christian closed play with a double-overtime win in the consolation championship. The Lady Mustangs carried narrow leads at every break, going up 10–5 after the first quarter, 16–10 at halftime, and 23–18 after three. Memorial pushed back late, erasing the deficit to force overtime at 29–29 and holding on through the first extra period with the score still tied 33–33.
Midland Christian held Memorial scoreless in the second overtime to secure the title. Jordan Stokes and Jordyn Hamilton led Midland Christian with 12 points each, while Selah Fox added 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Brooklyn Davis led Frenship Memorial with 11 points, going a perfect 7 of 7 from the free-throw line, and Zosia Storey added 10.
