What happened: Legacy and Midland High sent athletes to the UIL 6A Regional Track Meet over the weekend, with a top-four finish required to advance to state. Legacy’s boys 4×200-meter relay team, Masseye Diop, Weldon Cooks, Nicalus Moore, and Caden Ellis, delivered the headline moment, winning the regional title in 1:24.18, setting a meet record, and locking in a spot at state.

The time set a new meet record and ranks among the top performances in Texas this season (#7) and in the United States (#9), continuing to put Midland on the map at the highest level.

Legacy added more state qualifiers in the field events. On the girls’ side, Ibunkun Subair finished third in discus (137-08) to advance, while also placing second in shot put (42-05.50). On the boys’ side, Dylan Walters qualified with a second-place finish in shot put (57-05.25), continuing his strong postseason run.

Go deeper:  Just outside the cutoff, several Midland athletes still turned in competitive performances in deep regional fields. Madison Gonzales placed fifth in discus (131-02) and third in shot put (44-04.00), while Nicalus Moore added seventh-place finishes in both the long jump (21-10) and triple jump (45-00.25). Isaac Lujan cleared 6-04 to finish sixth in the high jump.

On the track, Brandon Wise (14.29) and Masseye Diop (15.03) both reached the finals in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing sixth and eighth. The Lady Rebels’ 4×200 relay (C. Wilson, J. Norman, T. Hubert, I. Smith) placed eighth, and Skye Lopez finished eighth in the 400 meters (58.01).

What’s next: The UIL State Track and Field Meet Class 6A competition is set for Saturday, May 16, in Austin, with field events and the 3200 meters beginning at 9 a.m., followed by running event finals at 5 p.m.
