Season Recap: MCS Football continues postseason tradition
The Midland Christian football team continued the program’s postseason tradition with its 21st consecutive playoff appearance in 2024. The Mustangs punched their ticket with their second-place finish in TAPPS Division II District I action.
The Tall City team started the season with a 1-4 mark through non-district play. MCS earned the solo win against Bishop Lynch, 20-3, with three of those losses coming against strong UIL programs across classifications. Midland Christian shone the brightest in its one-point loss to District 2-6A powerhouse Frenship. The Mustangs were one two-point conversion away from pulling off the massive upset heading into league play.
Two weeks later, MCS kicked off district play and collected its first two wins over Southwest Christian School and Fort Worth Christian. Midland Christian later closed the regular season with straight wins over Grapevine Faith Christian and Trinity Christian for a playoff berth. The Mustangs finished with a 4-1 district record and outscored their opponents 150-62 in those victories.
Head Coach Chris Cunningham’s group also earned several All-District honors. Case Cole, Rowdy Pearce, Boston Rodriguez, Angel Villafranco, Coy Hayes, Brady Young, and Cutter Smith were tabbed to the 1st Team. Socrates Pirela, Price Bryant, Preston Willhite, Avery Morgan, Noah Phillips, Cesar Gutierrez, Price Louder, Jaxon Jones, and Cadyn Bishop made the 2nd Team. Jansen Green, Colten Eaterwood, Jaret Stockstill, and Isaiah Matthews rounded out the All-District Honorable Mention squad.
Midland Christian faced Grace Community in the first round of the playoffs for the third season in a row. The Mustangs lost in 2023, but got revenge in 2024 with the 34-29 win for the Area Round Championship. The Tall City team saw its season come to an end the following week. MCS fell 46-23 to Regents to close the year with a 6-6 overall record.
The Midland Christian offense was led by the duo of Cole and Morgan. The running back Cole averaged over 100 all-purpose yards and recorded eight touchdowns on the year. The senior was recognized statewide for his productive final season, claiming his spot on the TAPPS DII All-State 1st Team. Dual-threat quarterback Morgan stepped into the starting signal-caller role in 2024 and added 30 total touchdowns.
Two-way standouts Young and Rodriguez both also made their impact all over the field. Young anchored the Mustangs’ defense, earning TAPPS 1-DII Defensive Player of the Year honors. The junior recorded 12.2 tackles per game, grabbed a couple of interceptions, and scored five total touchdowns. Rodriguez combined for a team-leading four receiving touchdowns and three interceptions, earning the senior the title of TAPPS 1-DII Athlete of the Year.
A handful of other Mustangs earned accolades from the 2024 season. Pearce joined Cole and Young with TAPPS DII All-State 1st Team honors. Rodriguez, Hayes, and Smith were named to the All-State 2nd Team, with Villafranco joining with an Honorable Mention nod.
Midland Christian will start the 2025 season with a new head coach. Coach Cunningham left the program in February after three seasons to take an athletic director position at Fort Worth Christian. MCS named former NFL kicker Phil Dawson as the next leader at the helm of the Mustangs in March. MCS starts this next chapter on August 29th at home against Graham with kickoff set for 7 pm.
