What happened: Midland Health’s Auxiliary Services are redefining what it means to volunteer in healthcare. With a 75-year legacy and growing impact, the Auxiliary isn’t just supporting hospital operations. Auxiliary shapes careers, builds community ties, and funds critical medical resources.

Why it matters: Auxiliary Services manages a wide range of activities, including hospital volunteer programs, gift shop operations, fundraising events, and vendor markets. The program supports a wide range of community members, from 14-year-old junior volunteers to 86-year-old mentors.

The big picture: The program has evolved since the 1950s, when volunteers cleaned bedpans and gave shots. Today, volunteers assist roughly 1,000 hospital visitors a day, often walking over 10,000 steps per shift. Junior and college volunteers gain hands-on training in retail, communications, and hospital operations, while adult and senior volunteers serve as mentors across multiple departments.

Auxiliary fundraising includes gift shop sales, seasonal vendor markets, and the beloved popcorn program. Recent contributions include a $500,000 building pledge, a high-tech birthing simulation mannequin (“Mama Jackie”), a new wheelchair fleet, and ongoing support for hospital maintenance.
