What happened: Basin Dream Center has dramatically expanded its facilities and programs to serve young adults aged 17–26 who are aging out of foster care or experiencing homelessness in the Permian Basin.

Why it matters: Without intervention, many in this age group face cycles of incarceration, pregnancy, abuse, or poverty. The Dream Center’s trauma-informed approach, rapid growth, and new emergency shelter initiative aim to break that cycle and create long-term, generational change.

The big picture: Since launching in 2018, Basin Dream Center has grown from two residential homes with 16 beds to a 14-acre campus with 23 beds, room to expand, and 24/7 staffing. This year alone, the center has already served 30 youth and is on pace to more than double the number helped in 2023.

Go deeper: In 2024, the center celebrated four graduates, including a young woman who earned a high school diploma, college degree, and phlebotomy certificate in the same week. Two young men are pursuing military service, and others have achieved family reunification or moved into independent housing. The center fosters healing with a “reinventing childhood” approach, including hosting birthday parties for youth who never had one and planning first-time trips to zoos and amusement parks.

The bottom line: The Dream Center collaborates with schools, law enforcement, hospitals, and other nonprofits. It offers life skills training, family reunification support, and a family-style living environment. Volunteers can serve meals, help with events, or maintain the grounds.

What’s next: A new emergency shelter will be the first of its kind in the Permian Basin, providing a safe place for street youth and a 30- to 60-day transition into full programs. The long-term vision includes building tiny homes for graduates transitioning into independence and maximizing the use of the property’s multiple buildings. Fundraising efforts are underway, with the first major event planned and a continued commitment to staying debt-free.
