What to watch: For the first time, parents and kids can compete together at this year’s Chalk the Block, creating their own chalk artwork alongside professional and high school artists. The third annual event is set for Saturday, Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Centennial Park.

This year’s theme is America250, and teams are encouraged to take inspiration from the country’s 250th anniversary in their designs.

The big picture: Family teams consist of two to five people, including at least one child age 12 or younger. Teams have from 10 a.m. to noon to design a 3-by-3-foot chalk square.

The City of Midland is encouraging family teams to make their artwork a collaborative, child-led project. Adults can help and draw alongside their children, but the finished square should reflect the whole team’s work. Spots are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis, so sign up today.
