What to watch: Midland Animal Services is using National Rescue Dog Day on Wednesday, May 20, to spotlight its Doggy Day Out program, which allows residents to spend the day with a shelter dog while helping improve that animal’s chances of adoption.

Why it matters: The program gives Midland families a low-commitment way to spend time with a rescue dog and test the waters for those interested in adoption, while helping shelter animals get some much-needed TLC.

The big picture: Residents 18 and older with a valid driver’s license can take a pre-screened furry companion for a walk in a local park, grab a “pup cup” or a snack from a drive-thru, or enjoy a myriad of dog-approved activities outside the shelter. The outings provide valuable socialization for the animals and help staff gather important feedback on each dog’s behavior and preferences in a real-world setting.

No appointment is necessary, and walk-ins are welcome.
