The Greenwood football team made a significant stride forward under second-year Head Coach Bryan Hill in 2024. The Rangers claimed the District 1-4A crown for the first time since 2019 with their perfect 4-0 league record.

Coach Hill’s squad kicked off the season with a 41-19 win over Childress on the road.  Greenwood later added four straight wins against Andrews, Shallowater, Pecos, and Liberty, heading into District 1-4A competition with a 5-1 record. The Rangers then increased their win total through the first stretch of league play with victories over perennial programs Monahans, Fort Stockton, and Seminole in three consecutive weeks. The local squad closed the regular season with a 62-12 win over Snyder, where receiver Dylan Payton made program history by notching four receiving touchdowns in one game. Greenwood finished district play with an undefeated record, some hardware, and a ticket to the postseason.

Several Rangers also earned All-District Honors. Luke Fails, Dakota Underhill, Kasen Brooks, Layne Wauson, Nathan Tarango, Nathaniel Romero, Cade Rowoldt, Jayden Colvert, Payton, Erik Bustamante, and Reece Watzl were all named to the 1st Team. Jasyah Galindo, Noah Rivas, Cade Evans, Rhilley Allen, and Caleb Salinas made the 2nd Team. Ty Box and Aaron Carbajal were tabbed to the Honorable Mention list.

Greenwood met Borger in the first round of the postseason. The Rangers earned their first playoff win and Bi-District Championship since 2020 with the 50-17 victory. This group finished the season as Area round finalists with a 10-2 overall record. Coach Hill and his staff earned District 1-4A Coaching Staff of the Year honors.

Landon Butts was a standout for the Rangers on the defensive side of the ball. The senior broke two school records during his final season. The linebacker recorded the most sacks in a season with 13 and the most sacks in a game with five. Butts collected the 4A Built Ford Tough Player of the Week award for his five-sack performance against Shallowater. The upperclassman also added District 1-4A Defensive MVP,  4A Blue Bell/Texas Sports Writer Association Third Team All-State, and Padilla Poll 2nd Team All-State Linebacker to his list of accolades.

Lane Wilhelm was also recognized for his contributions to the defense. The sophomore was named the district’s Defensive Newcomer. The defensive lineman totaled two sacks, five tackles, and one tackle for loss in his first varsity season. Lincoln Madrid rounded out the league honorees as the District MVP. The signal caller led the attack with 26 total touchdowns, 1,178 passing yards, and 741 rushing yards.

Greenwood starts the 2025 season on August 29th against Childress at home. Kickoff is set for 7 pm.
