What happened: Midland Memorial Hospital has notified the Midland County Elections Administrator that it will cancel its November election after all three board members up for re-election drew no opponents.

The big picture: Tommy Flores (District 3 incumbent – pictured left), Link Grimes (District 4 incumbent – pictured middle), and Shannon Goldapp (District 7 incumbent – pictured right) filed for re-election to the Midland County Hospital District Board of Directors and were unopposed.

Under Texas Election Code Chapter 2, a political subdivision may cancel an election when each candidate for an office on the ballot is unopposed. The candidates are then declared elected without appearing on the ballot. Canceling its portion of the election also means the hospital district will not have to pay its share of the cost of conducting the November election.

The same three seats — Districts 3, 4, and 7 — were also uncontested in 2022. The board voted at its Sept. 1, 2022 meeting to certify the candidates as unopposed and cancel that election as well.

What’s next: The remaining four board seats — Districts 1, 2, 5, and 6 — are not up for election until 2028.
