What happened: In a West Texas showdown that lived up to the hype, Midland Legacy fell 51–48 to Odessa Permian on Friday night, Oct. 24. The Rebels stormed out to a 14–7 lead after a defensive touchdown and a rushing score, but the Panthers answered quickly, setting the stage for a back-and-forth battle that featured 14 total touchdowns and a game-winning field goal in the final seconds.

The big picture: The loss dropped Legacy to 3–5 overall and 2–1 in district play, but the Rebels’ offense continued to shine, piling up more than 480 yards and topping 40 points for the second straight week. Quarterback JP Reyes threw for 281 yards and two touchdowns, connecting often with sophomore J. Anders, who finished with 173 receiving yards and a 72-yard score.

Running back M. Rogers added 99 yards on five carries, including a 94-yard touchdown run, while Hayes Hamm powered in two rushing touchdowns and added a short reception. Defensively, Legacy created big moments of its own. Joe Pesina returned an interception for a touchdown, David Ihediwa led the team with 14 tackles and one tackle for loss, and both Pesina and Gabriel Henry recorded sacks. Kicker S. Verastegui remained perfect on the night, converting all six extra points and both field goals.

Legacy struck first on Pesina’s interception return before the teams traded blows through a 34–31 halftime score in favor of Permian. The Rebels reclaimed the lead in the third quarter with a touchdown pass from Reyes to Anders, but the Panthers answered on the ground and sealed the win with a late field goal to go up 51–48. Legacy’s final drive stalled near midfield, ending one of the season’s most explosive games.
