Season Recap: LHS Boys Basketball posts best record in three years
The Midland Legacy boys basketball team posted its first winning record in three seasons with the 18-14 mark in the 2024-2025 campaign. The Rebels finished one win away from the playoffs with a 3-7 record in District 2-6A competition.
Head Coach Chris Suttle and company first found success in non-district tournament play in the Tall City Oilman’s Classic. The host team shared the tourney championship with Permian. Both squads posted an undefeated 4-0 record over the three days. LHS had to gut out three of four of those wins with the contests separated by less than 10 points each. Legacy won its championship-clinching game against El Paso Americas 50-47 in overtime.
The second half of the season tipped off with rival action against Midland High. The Rebels dominated in the district opener with a 62-42 victory. LHS later earned the season sweep of the crosstown foe with the 50-48 win in round two. Midland Legacy also added a victory over San Angelo Central 65-61 in the penultimate game of the regular season. LHS came into the finale against Odessa High with a playoff bid on the line. The winner would claim the final postseason ticket. The Rebels couldn’t collect that final victory with the 60-57 loss to the Bronchos. Midland Legacy finished above 500 for the first time since the 2021-2022 season.
Diego Rodriguez led the Legacy squad offensively. The UTPB commit scored 711 of the Rebels’ points, averaging 22.2 points per game. The senior also added a team-leading 2.8 steals per game. These numbers led to the standout earning District 2-6A All-District 1st Team honors.
Tristine Turner held things down on the defensive side of the ball. The sophomore averaged a team-leading 8.6 rebounds and a block per game. The big man was also included on the All-District 2nd Team along with teammates Jamar Shields and Jay Jay Starling. Nic Moore and John Webster were named to the Honorable Mention list.
