Lady Mustangs claim area title in playoff win over Regents

What happened: Midland Christian opened the TAPPS 5A playoffs with a 53–11 home win over Austin Regents on Tuesday, Feb. 17. The victory secured the Lady Mustangs the TAPPS 5A Area Championship and moved them to 30–7 overall. Midland Christian finished district play 13–1 and first in TAPPS 5A District 1. Regents, the fourth-place team from District 2, ended the season at 8–12 overall.
Jordyn Hamilton led Midland Christian with 13 points. Selah Fox added 11, and Lauren Alvizo finished with 10.
The big picture: Selah Fox opened the game with two 3-pointers, then Lauren Alvizo added a paint touch and another triple to close an 11–0 first quarter.
The Lady Mustangs kept building in the second. Jordyn Hamilton opened the period with an and-one, followed by paint touches from Jordan Stokes, Hamilton, and Fox. Fox later knocked down a 3-pointer, and Trinity Etheredge closed the half with another from deep, sending Midland Christian into halftime up 28–0.
After the break, Midland Christian extended the lead while rotating the full bench. The Lady Mustangs opened the third quarter with paint scores from Kailey Davis, Alvizo, and Hamilton. McKenna Blackwood capped the period with a 3-pointer, pushing the margin to 43–5.
In the fourth, Alvizo converted another and-one to start the quarter. Paint touches from Kailey Davis and Addi Tatsch followed before Landree Slaughter closed the game with a 3-pointer to seal the opening-round win.
