Midland Community Theater brings Texas story Giant to stage
What happened: Midland Community Theatre (MCT) kicked off its production of Giant with a captivating opening night on Feb. 6 at Davis Theatre I. Directed by Adam Sahli, the musical spans decades of Texas life, with dialogue and songs in English and Spanish enhanced by innovative LED wall subtitles designed to make the production easier to follow
The show runs through Mar. 7, with a Pay-What-You-Can matinee on February 15 at 2:30 p.m. Opening night also featured a Ballet Folklórico pre-show. The production is rated PT for preteens and older.
The big picture: Adapted from Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edna Ferber’s classic novel, Giant is a new American musical with a book by Tony-nominated Sybille Pearson and music and lyrics by five-time Tony nominee Michael John LaChiusa. The story follows a Texas ranching family navigating greed, prejudice, and vast Texas landscapes, earning acclaim in its off-Broadway run at the Public Theater.
MCT’s rendition highlights the state’s unique spirit, blending drama with bilingual elements to immerse audiences in an authentic cultural tapestry.
Go deeper: MCT pairs the production with the Cattleman’s Ball on Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. at 2000 W. Wadley Ave., benefiting both MCT and the Petroleum Museum. This private event features dinner, an open bar, and an exclusive performance of Giant. Sponsorship opportunities are available. Attendees can RSVP online.
