Midland athletes compete at Texas Relays against top talent

What happened: Athletes from Midland Christian, Legacy, Greenwood, and Midland Classical competed at the Texas Relays in Austin, one of the top track and field meets in the country, with several teams advancing to finals and turning in strong performances against elite competition.
The big picture: Greenwood led the way with multiple standout performances, especially in the relay events.
The boys’ 4×200-meter relay team advanced to the finals after posting a 1:27.90 in prelims. They followed that with a 1:29.68 in the finals, finishing seventh overall, just two hundredths of a second from sixth place. The 4×400-meter relay team also made the finals, finishing sixth with a 3:21 after a 3:20 in prelims.
Individually, Kasen Brooks ran a 15.67 in the 110-meter hurdles, while Dylan Payton posted a 38.23 in the 300-meter hurdles. The 4×100-meter relay team clocked a 42.66.
In field events, ninth grader Andree Baer placed eighth in the high jump with a mark of 5-5.50, while Jayden Colvert competed in shot put.
On the girls’ side, Greenwood posted a 50.23 in the 4×100-meter relay, a 1:43.05 in the 4×200, and a 3:20.83 in the 4×400.
Go deeper: Midland Christian also turned in strong relay performances, including a 1:30.67 in the 4×200-meter relay and a 3:27 in the 4×400-meter relay. On the girls side, Midland Christian posted a 50.42 in the 4×100, a 1:46.44 in the 4×200, a season best, and a 3:27.10 in the 4×400.
In field events, Midland Christian’s Rowdy Pearce placed eighth in shot put with a throw of 55-3.75. Legacy’s Dylan Walters placed 20th in shot put with 48-11.75, Legacy’s Nick Moore finished 12th in triple jump with 43-7.50, and Midland Classical’s Barron Tate placed 15th in discus with 160-6.25.
On the girls side, Legacy’s Madison Gonzales placed fourth in shot put with 41-2 and also competed in discus with 122-2.75. Teammate Ibukun Subair placed 12th in shot put with 37-11.75.
