Midland jury hands down life sentence in child abuse case
What happened: A Midland jury sentenced 44-year-old Michael Andrew Counterman to life in prison and a $10,000 fine on Jan. 16, following a week-long trial in the 142nd District Court presided over by Judge David G. Rogers.
The jury convicted Counterman of one count of continuous sexual abuse of a young child, one count of aggravated sexual assault of a child under six, and one count of aggravated sexual assault of a child under 14, according to a press release from Midland County District Attorney Glenn Harwood’s Office
The big picture: Prosecutors said the offense of continuous sexual abuse of a young child carries a sentencing range of 25 years to life in prison with no possibility of parole. In addition to the victim in the charged offenses, four other individuals testified during the trial that Counterman sexually abused them on various occasions over the past 30 years.
The case was investigated by detectives from the Midland Police Department. Assistant District Attorneys Todd Meador, Steven Lively, and David McCracken prosecuted the case. The press release also noted that Counterman had several prior misdemeanor and felony convictions.
