Midland sweeps Legacy in crosstown baseball series
What happened: Midland Bulldogs baseball swept the Legacy Rebels in district play, winning 5-0 on Thursday, April 16, before taking a doubleheader on Friday, April 17, 22-5 and 11-1. The Bulldogs improved to 24-4 overall and 10-2 in district, sitting in second place. Legacy fell to 13-11-2 overall and 3-9 in district, sitting in fifth place.
The big picture: The series really unfolded during Friday’s doubleheader, and it was packed. Parking was tight, and the early innings were full of energy. The crowd was reacting to calls, parents and fans were chirping back and forth. It was the kind of atmosphere you expect in a true crosstown matchup.
In the first game of the night, both teams delivered home runs in the fourth inning, and for a moment, it felt competitive. As Midland’s offense kept building, the game started to open up. By the fifth inning, with the score at 18-4, the tone shifted. The crowd thinned, and the noise faded. By the second game, it was mostly families and close friends still in the stands.
But the space around the field stayed alive. Kids ran behind the stadium playing football, then came back to grab snacks from the concession stand. Behind home plate, a group of dads from both teams stood together, talking about their sons and the season. It wasn’t about the score anymore, just baseball in Midland, Texas, on a Friday night.
What’s next: Midland closes district play against the Permian Panthers with a three-game series on Thursday and Friday, April 23–24. Legacy faces the Odessa Bronchos baseball in its final three-game series on Thursday and Friday as well.
