Free seminar helps Midland parents navigate online risks
What to watch: Midland Freshman High School PTA is hosting a free community event, “Online Safety for Parents – How to Protect Your Children in a Digital World,” on Monday, March 2, at 6 p.m. at the MFHS cafeteria, 801 N. Loop 250 W. The event will feature local FBI and Homeland Security agents who specialize in crimes against children.
Why it matters: As more of children’s social lives move online, so do the risks. Organizers say the seminar will give Midland parents practical tools to recognize warning signs, understand common online threats, and respond appropriately. The session is designed to help families have informed conversations about digital safety at home. MFHS students may receive extra credit if a parent or guardian attends.
National data from last year shows that one in five teens reported experiencing sextortion, and self-harm was present in one in seven of those cases. Federal reports of AI-related child exploitation increased sharply, rising from roughly 6,000 the previous year to more than 440,000. Surveys also show that about one in three teens report using a VPN to mask their online activity and location and activity.
The big picture: Topics will include sextortion, hidden electronic devices, online communication platforms, drug distribution and exposure, and behavioral warning signs.
This is the first Midland Freshman High School PTA event opened to the broader community. Organizers say interest from other campuses prompted them to expand attendance. If turnout is strong, future sessions may address additional topics and potentially include student-focused programming.
What they’re saying: “We cannot stress enough how crucial it is to be knowledgeable about what our children are up against,” organizers said. “The best way to protect our children is to teach them what to watch out for and that starts by learning ourselves what to watch out for.”
What’s next: The event is set for Monday, Mar. 2 at 6:00 p.m. at the Midland Freshman High School Cafeteria (801 N. Loop 250 W.). Mark your calendars and spread the word to other parents. MFHS students can earn extra credit if their parents or guardians attend.
