What happened: Midland County officially opened the Sergeant Michael Naylor Law Enforcement Complex today, honoring the late deputy’s service and sacrifice. The dedication drew a crowd of local officials, law enforcement, and residents, all paying tribute to Sgt. Naylor.

Why it matters: Naming the facility after Sgt. Naylor honors a life of courage and compassion while inspiring those who serve today. The dedication follows a unanimous vote to rename the new sheriff’s office and the detention center after two men who served and shaped our local law enforcement. In tandem, the county’s detention center honors former Sheriff Gary Painter.

The big picture: Sgt. Michael Joe Naylor was killed in the line of duty on October 9, 2014, while attempting to serve a criminal warrant. Naylor became the first known deputy in the history of Midland County to be killed in the line of duty. During his 15 years with the Midland County Sheriff’s Office, he led the Mental Health Unit and the Honor Guard.
