Council proposed tax rate would increase bills $55
What to watch: The Midland City Council will hold a special meeting Aug. 13 at 9 a.m.
Why it matters: Council will set the “tax ceiling” for the coming year, the highest property tax rate it can adopt in September. The council may choose a lower rate next month, but cannot exceed the ceiling set on Wednesday.
Go deeper: The Midland County Appraisal District reports that property values rose an average of 4.68%. A home valued at $350,000 last year now averages $366,380. At the proposed rate, this home would pay about $55 more in city taxes. The proposed rate would generate about $1.14 million more than last year.
