What to watch: Midland residents can run alongside local police officers while supporting Teen F.L.O.W. Youth Ministry during the Midland Police Department’s annual Pursuit 1K and 5K on Saturday, Aug. 8.

The superhero-themed, family-friendly event begins at the Midland Police Department, 601 N. Loraine St., with a 1K fun run/walk at 8 a.m. followed by a 5K run/walk at 8:30 a.m. Participants are encouraged to dress as their favorite superhero.

The big picture: The 5K includes an optional “14:46 Challenge,” which asks participants to complete the first 1.5 miles in 14 minutes and 46 seconds or faster, matching the 1.5-mile run standard required of prospective Midland police officers. Finishers who meet the benchmark will receive a surprise gift after the race.

Registration costs $30 for the 1K and $35 for the 5K, plus processing fees. Online registration closes at 11:59 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7. Packet pickup is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 7 at Midland Athletic Company. Race-day packet pickup will be available from 6:15 to 7:45 a.m.

Go deeper: The race benefits Teen F.L.O.W. Youth Ministry, a Midland nonprofit that has served local teenagers for more than 25 years. The organization provides mentorship, Bible studies, life-skills training, meals, educational opportunities, and recreational activities for teenagers ages 13 to 18. More than 150 students participate in the ministry each week.
