What to watch: The Bush Family Home is taking playtime back to the 1950s this Saturday, Sept. 26, with free outdoor games inspired by the years the Bush family lived in Midland.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., families can stop by the historic home at 1412 W. Ohio St. to play croquet, marbles, jacks, jump rope, and other games. Visitors can also make their own marbles. The activities are free, while regular admission applies for those who want to tour the home.

The big picture: The event is part of Worldwide Day of Play, an initiative from Nickelodeon and the Association of Children’s Museums that encourages children and families to learn through play.

This year, the Bush Family Home is adding a miniature golf putting game with a connection to Midland. George W. Bush and Laura Bush had their first date at a Midland miniature golf course in August 1977, after friends introduced them. They married three months later.

“1950s was a time where kids got out and played in the yard, rode bikes, and spent much of their free time outside,” Site Manager Troy Gray said.
