What happened: Fall high school sports are back in Midland. The 17th annual Tall City Cross Country invite saw 868 student runners from 41 schools participate at Hogan Park Sibley Nature Center on Saturday, Aug. 22.

Hayden Graves of Monahans posted the fastest boys’ time of 15:48, and Amelia Anderson of Lubbock High posted the fastest girls’ time of 18:55. 8th grader Grant McCain won the boys junior high run with a time of 11:49, and 8th grader Maili Ruiz of Greenwood won the girls junior high division with a time of 12:11.

Midland Classical Academy’s (MCA) boys cross-country team won the small-team varsity division. Midland Lee girls won the large-school division with Midland High taking second.

The big picture: MCA boys edged out Midland Texas Leadership Charter Academy (TLCA) 62 to 73 points, surviving a great run by TLCA’s top finisher, senior Evan Wymore of 17:39. MCA boys were led by Junior Locke Bundy (5th), Sophomore James Clark (10th) and Senior James Cooper (12th) with times of 18:15, 18:40, & 19:09 on the 3.1 miles course. Josh Wiggins (24, 20:04) and Freshman Elliot Mann (32, 20:34) finished out the scoring for MCA.

Midland Lee won the large school division with 106 points, edging out second-place Lubbock Wolfforth with 113 points. Lee runners who placed were Senior Jamie Arreola (4, 16:27), Junior Logan Hammontree (13, 17:13), Junior Jensen Kimbrough (26, 17:54), Sophomore Antonio Duenas (30, 17:57), and Sophomore Roberto Romero (38, 18:20).

Midland Lee dominated the girls division, posting 47 points compared to Midland High in second with 105 points. Lee runners who placed were Freshman Roxie Patterson (3, 19:57), Junior Elsy Kiprono (8, 20:31), Senior Abigail Hinojosa (11, 20:39), Sophomore Maia Gordillo (14, 20:59), and Junior Melissa Fuentes (15, 21:20).

Midland High placed 9th overall and was led by Sophomore Ethan Brents (17, 17:36). Midland High runners who placed were Freshman Emma Wilson (9, 20:33), Sophomore Olivia Lopez (23, 22:05), Freshman Camila Barajas (24, 22:11), Sophomore Taflyn Williams (28, 22:21), and Senior Sasha Salgado (35, 23:53).
