What to watch: Construction continues moving forward at Zoo Midland, with its service area nearing completion and work preparing to begin on one of the project’s signature exhibits.

The big picture: The lower savanna area foundation pads are prepped for all 12 structures, and the next major structure to go vertical will be the giraffe barn, with construction expected to begin in the coming weeks. Light poles and parking lot curbing are in progress, with paving not far behind (photo above). The event center has almost all of its structural framing complete and will begin receiving exterior cladding soon (photo below).

Zoo Midland will also attend the 6th Annual Basin PBS & Camp Fire West Texas Back to School Festival on Aug. 8. The event will feature Clifford the Big Red Dog, hands-on activities from community organizations, and free school supplies while supplies last. Zoo Director Jason Green will be on hand, and attendees can pick up Zoo Midland merchandise.
