What to watch: Construction continues moving forward at Zoo Midland, with crews making significant progress on the Savannah, the zoo’s largest exhibit, despite the summer heat. The Savannah will eventually house giraffes, rhinos, predators, and primates, along with two playgrounds for visitors.

The big picture: The service-area buildings are entering their final construction stages, while a new courtyard connecting the buildings is taking shape and will serve as a central gathering area for zoo staff during breaks and lunches.

In the upper Savannah, the rhino barn structure (photo above) is now complete with its roof installed, and construction has begun on the event center (below left) as the building begins to go vertical. In the lower Savannah, crews have also started preparing building sites (below right) for several new animal habitats, including the predator, flamingo, primate, and mixed-species exhibits.
