Mustangs rally past No. 3 Trinity Christian in overtime thriller
What happened: TAPPS 5A No. 4 Midland Christian earned a 54–50 overtime road win over No. 3 Lubbock Trinity Christian on Tuesday, Jan. 6, in district play. The victory moved the Mustangs to 20–7 overall and 3–0 in district. Meanwhile, Trinity Christian dropped to 20–6 overall and 3–2 in district. The win marked a comeback for Midland Christian, who previously fell to the Lions 58–48 during the Caprock Classic.
The big picture: Midland Christian set the tone early and built a 19–10 lead after the first quarter. Trinity Christian cut into the lead in the second quarter, outscoring Midland Christian 15–11, but the Mustangs still carried a 30–25 advantage into halftime. Trinity Christian answered after the break and again outscored Midland Christian in the third quarter to take a 37–34 lead.
The Mustangs picked it up in the fourth to tie the Lions 46–46 at the end of regulation and move into overtime. Midland Christian responded in the extra period, outscoring Trinity Christian 8–4 to secure the overtime win.
Go deeper: The overtime victory completed a full program sweep for Midland Christian in Lubbock, as both the boys and girls teams earned wins. Midland Christian hasn’t seen a sweep inside the Runnin’ Lions Den in several years.
