What to know: Hogan Park is Midland’s largest municipal park, spanning roughly 620 acres. Located off Wadley Avenue, the park includes baseball and softball fields, walking trails, playground areas, a dog park, and courts for croquet and horseshoes.

The big picture: The playground area has all the usual attractions, including climbing structures, slides for multiple age groups, obstacle features, and swings for younger children. The equipment is built around a single central structure, making it easier for parents to keep an eye on their kids. The ground surface is AstroTurf, which helps cushion falls but can become hot during the summer months.

A paved walking loop circles the playground and works well for strollers, bikes, and scooters. The outlying grassy fields are great for running around. The pavilion next to the playground features 10 picnic tables and a grill, making it a popular spot for birthday parties and family gatherings. Hogan Park also sits near several other attractions, including the Sibley Nature Center and Hogan Park Golf Course.

What they’re saying: Visitors often note the park’s quiet setting away from major roads, along with the large shaded pavilion and numerous benches under mature trees. Many families use the area for picnics, barbecues and youth sports gatherings. Some park-goers have also commented that portions of the concrete and playground equipment could benefit from upgrades.

Go deeper: The standout Hogan’s Run Off Leash Dog Park within the grounds features three fenced areas: one for large dogs, one for small, and an obstacle course area. The park is complete with shaded benches, water stations, waste bags for owner convenience and several agility training options. Overall it’s a clean, friendly spot for pet-loving families.

Catch up quick: Hogan Park is named after Fred T. Hogan, who served as Midland mayor from 1946 to 1947. Hogan owned a local oilfield trucking company and helped return Midland Army Airfield to city control after World War II — a move that contributed to the development of what is now Midland International Air and Space Port.

The land originally served as the Wadley Well Field, developed in the early 1940s as a municipal water source. At its peak the system pumped up to 4.5 million gallons of water per day before being shut down in the 1960s because of perchlorate concerns. The area was officially renamed for Hogan in 1953.
