Police respond to two shootings, monitor gang activity
What happened: Midland police responded to two separate shootings on Saturday, April 26. An early-morning officer-involved shooting near the Fair to Midland bar left one suspect in critical condition and in custody. Later that morning, a man was shot while riding a motorcycle on West Loop 250. Authorities say the incidents are not directly related, and both remain under investigation.
The big picture: Around 1:21 a.m., officers working off-duty near the Fair to Midland bar heard gunfire and encountered an armed suspect, resulting in an officer-involved shooting. The suspect was transported to Midland Memorial Hospital in critical condition and remains in custody. Two additional men with gunshot wounds later arrived at the hospital and were treated and released.
Later that morning, around 8:59 a.m., a 58-year-old El Paso man was shot multiple times while riding a motorcycle on West Loop 250. He underwent surgery and is expected to survive. Authorities identified him as a member of the Mongols Outlaw Motorcycle Gang.
Go deeper: Later that afternoon on Interstate 20, authorities responded to a retaliatory stabbing involving members of the Mongols and rival Bandidos Outlaw Motorcycle Gang. Multiple arrests were made. Midland Police and the Texas Anti-Gang Center are monitoring for potential retaliation tied to the motorcycle gang activity. Officials said the victim in the Loop 250 shooting has not been fully cooperative with investigators.
Midland Police said the Fair to Midland shooting stemmed from a fight across the street and that officers responded quickly to the gunfire. The Texas Rangers are investigating the officer-involved shooting near Fair to Midland.
