What to watch: Zoo Midland is offering Midland students a chance to hear directly from Zoo Director Jason Green about Zoo Midland, animals, zoo careers, and more through classroom visits this fall.

Go deeper: Teachers and principals interested in scheduling a visit can fill out this form. The zoo team says they’ll do their best to accommodate as many requests as possible.

The zoo’s August newsletter also highlighted a few fun events to mark on the calendar:

  • August 9 – Basin PBS Back-to-School Festival: A free, family-focused festival from 12–4 p.m. at the Bush Convention Center. Kids can enjoy hands-on activities and stop by the Zoo Midland table to learn more about the upcoming zoo.
  • August 13 – International Armadillo Day: Texas is home to just one of the world’s 20+ armadillo species—the Nine-banded Armadillo, which is also the state’s official small mammal.

Midland’s top stories. One quick email. Free, every Friday.
Get Midland Wrapped, our free weekly email for busy Midland residents. Each Friday, we break down the week’s most important local stories — what happened, why it matters, and what to watch next — so you can stay informed without the noise.
  • August 16 – World Honeybee Day: It takes over 550 bees to produce a single pound of honey. Local honey not only supports pollinators but may also help with allergies. A strong hive can produce up to 60 pounds of honey per year.

  • August 26 – World African Wild Dog Day: Fewer than 7,000 African Wild Dogs remain in the wild. Known for their teamwork and hunting ability, these endangered canines benefit from global habitat preservation efforts.
