What happened: For many years, Midlanders have talked about what it would be like if the city finally had a place where basketball, volleyball, and soccer players, as well as families, could all gather under one roof. People were talking about it even when I was in high school, and that feels like a lifetime ago.

That day has finally arrived. The Midland Athletic Syndicate (MAS) and Diamondback Energy Athletic Complex are officially open. After spending some time inside the facility, it’s easy to see why so many people have been excited about it.

When I walked through the doors, nearly every corner of the building was busy. Basketballs bounced across multiple courts, volleyball players worked through drills at camp, kids chased soccer balls across the indoor turf, families played games together on the court, and people walked the track upstairs to get some steps in for the day.

It didn’t feel like a brand-new building. It already felt like part of Midland.

The big picture: The Diamondback Energy Athletic Complex was built to give Midland athletes a place to train, compete, and enjoy sports year-round. Inside, the facility features six basketball courts that convert into 12 volleyball courts, a full-size indoor turf field for soccer and futsal, a second-floor walking track, meeting rooms, player lounges, an outdoor patio, and plenty of seating for spectators.

One feature I wasn’t expecting was the Kent Kwik inside the building. Whether you forgot a drink, needed a quick snack between games, or just wanted to grab something before heading home, it’s a convenient addition for families spending the day at the complex.

Another thing that stood out was how welcoming the facility felt. During designated open gym hours, anyone can walk in and play without a membership. Anyone and everyone is welcome. Schedules change depending on camps, leagues, and tournaments, but it’s nice knowing there’s a place where people can show up and enjoy the sports they love. No memberships. No fees.

Go deeper: While I was there, I struck up conversations with several people using the facility. The response was almost identical every time. Most said they had been waiting years for something like this to come to Midland. Instead of traveling to other cities for practices, tournaments, or quality indoor court space, families now have a facility right here at home.

MAS is already filling the calendar with basketball, volleyball, soccer, and futsal leagues, camps, and tournaments, and organizers say even more events are on the way.

The complex is also available for community rentals, making it a space for everything from practices and birthday parties to large tournaments and community events. For a full schedule of leagues, camps, tournaments, and open gym hours, visit the MAS website.

Why it matters: Midland has always been a sports town. We’ve produced state champions, college athletes, Olympians, and professionals across nearly every sport. But for years, many of the biggest tournaments and events were held elsewhere because Midland didn’t have the indoor space to host them.

Now it does.

The Diamondback Energy Athletic Complex isn’t just another gym. It’s a place where kids can fall in love with a new sport, where families can spend an afternoon together, and where Midland has an opportunity to bring even more athletic events and the visitors that come with them to the Permian Basin.

After seeing it for myself, I don’t think this building is just about sports. I think it’s going to become one of those places where Midland gathers.
