Midland softball closes season as one of Texas’ top teams

What happened: Midland High’s softball team’s postseason run ended in the area round against the No. 18-ranked team in Texas, Byron Nelson. The Lady Bulldogs finished the season 34-5 overall and 10-0 in district, securing the district championship.
The big picture: Midland opened the playoffs with a bi-district sweep of Montwood, winning one of the games 11-0. In the area round, Midland faced Byron Nelson, ranked No. 18 in Texas and No. 10 in UIL 6A. After dropping the first game 6-3, the Lady Bulldogs responded with a 9-3 win to force a third game before falling 10-4.
Go deeper: Midland established itself as one of the top teams in Texas, finishing ranked No. 23 in the state and No. 12 in UIL 6A. The Lady Bulldogs went undefeated at home (9-0) and posted an .872 winning percentage.
Midland scored 430 runs while allowing just 106, controlling games on both sides. The Lady Bulldogs combined run-rule wins with the ability to close out tight matchups, including extra-inning wins over Dobie and Abilene. Their district play was decisive, with sweeps over Permian, Legacy, and Odessa.
