What happened: The Midland Christian boys and girls cross country teams participated in the TAPPS 5A state championship on Monday, Oct. 27, at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco. The boys finished third overall, anchored by standout performances from Mustangs runners Logan Hammontree and Braden Belew.

Go deeper: On the boys’ side, Hammontree finished sixth overall, while Belew placed seventh, both bringing home top-10 finishes that were pivotal in securing the team’s third-place finish behind San Antonio Christian and Fort Bend Christian Academy.

On the girls’ side, Kayelynn Vines led the team with a 23rd-place finish, while seniors Mallory West and Belinda Peña closed their careers with outstanding performances, exemplifying courage, grace, and leadership.

What they’re saying: “This team embodied what it means to run with purpose and faith, pushing through every challenge together,” Coach Ericka Mickler said. “Running is a lot like life, it’s full of hills, pain, and moments that test you. But even through heartbreak, we find growth. Those moments don’t break us, they build us, inspire us to rise higher, and remind us that greatness comes through perseverance. We are so proud of this team, for the miles, mindset, and the message they carry.”
