What happened:  MHS held on to beat San Angelo Central on rain-soaked field Friday night 43-40.  The win moves Midland High to 2-1 in district play and 5-4 overall with a season finale set up next week against their cross town rival the Lee Rebels.

The big picture: MHS opened the scoring on their second drive with a 50 yard TD pass from Holt Howard to Devin Rodriquez.  On SA’s next possession MHS picked up a bobbled snap from the punter and ran it back to take a 14-0 lead.  Each team would score on their remaining possessions before half, with Howard scoring on two 4 yard TD runs and again getting a special teams score running a extra point back.  MHS took a 30-20 lead into half time.

MHS would force a punt on SA’s first possession, then drive down the field for another Hold 4 yard TD run.  SA came back with a 7 yard TD run from running back Zeyvion Johnson to make it 37-27.  SA would try an onside kick but it was recovered by MHS.  MHS would then grind the rest of the 3rd quarter with a long drive ending in a short field goal with about 10 minutes left.  MHS would then get two interceptions on the next SA possessions resulting in   only a field goal for HS by Rylan Marino, but run the clock down to below 7 minutes.  SA responded with a 1 play 75 yd TD from QB Micah Smith to Jesse Smith making the score 43-33 after MHS stopped the 2 point attempt.  MHS then recovered another onside kick and then ran the clock down below 2 minutes, converting a 4th and 4 with a completion to Walker Campbell on the first set of downs.  SA then had another quick strike with a 65 yard TD pass to Gavin Johnson.   MHS recovered a final onside kick and were able to run the final minute off the clock.

What’s next: Midland High (2-1) will play Midland Lee (2-1) at 7 p.m. Friday, November 6th. The winner of that game will take 2nd place in district. Permian has already clinched the district title at 3-0 and having already defeated both Midland schools.
