What to watch: The Midland ISD board will hold a special meeting Aug. 12 at 5:30 p.m.

Why it matters: Trustees will discuss and vote on renaming the current Midland Legacy High School and Legacy Freshman High School, as well as the future high school, to Midland Lee High School and Midland Lee Freshman High School starting in the 2026–27 school year.

Catch up quick: On July 27, 2020, the board voted 6-1 to rename the school. A 23-member Citizen Renaming Committee recommended “Legacy of Equality and Excellence.” At the Oct. 14 board meeting, that name failed 2-5. The board then voted 5-2 to rename the campuses “Legacy.”

On July 4 this year, Trustee Josh Guinn announced he would request the board consider restoring “Lee” to the school names. Trustee Matt Friez voiced support to let the people decide. On July 29, trustees updated the district’s facility naming policy, adding a rule that namesakes must not have advocated or fought in a war against the United States. The revised policy passed 5-0. Trustees Matt Friez and Michael Booker were absent.
