Midland Wellness Tour returns with week of free events
What to know: Midland Health’s 12th annual Community-Wide Wellness Tour runs Saturday, Aug. 8, through Friday, Aug. 14. Residents can take in free fitness classes at COM Aquatics, join a guided hike at Sibley Nature Center, attend pregnancy and parenting classes at Midland Birth Center, learn about fresh-milled grains at Twelve Gate Coffee Company, and attend a heart-health class at Natural Grocers.
The week also includes free teen heart screenings, a free clinic for uninsured adults, mental health education, mammograms, and several free family events. A full schedule is available at midlandwellnesstour.com.
The big picture: Midland Health is bringing back the free Ninja Nation 125 ft. obstacle course for ages 5 years and older, plus an Interactive Resource Fair at the Diamondback Energy Athletic Complex, 5501 Deauville Blvd., from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, along with a youth sports safety and performance event.
Across town, the Midland Fire Department will host its free Wet N’ Wild event at CJ Kelly Park, 5500 League Dr., with waterslides, an obstacle course, and firetrucks also from 4-7 p.m. on Friday.
Other events include:
- Free teen heart screenings: Championship Hearts will offer free heart screenings for teenagers from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, at Midland Memorial Hospital.
- Pregnancy and parenting classes: Midland Birth Center will host several educational events throughout the week, including childbirth education Saturday, baby-led weaning Wednesday, maternal mental health Thursday and an introduction to breastfeeding Friday. Midland Health will also offer a breastfeeding class Tuesday.
- Mental health: Midland Health will host a Mental Health Self-Care Class at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Midland College’s Davidson Family Health Science Building.
- Free clinic for uninsured adults: Casa de Amigos will offer a free clinic for uninsured adults from 4-7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday at 1101 Garden Lane.
- Fitness classes: Midland Yoga Works, Orangetheory Fitness and COM Aquatics are offering free classes during the week. Midland College will also open the Chap Center for walking from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
- Outdoor wellness: Sibley Nature Center will host a guided nature hike from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Keep Midland Beautiful will also host a park walk and seed-planting activity Thursday evening.
- Health education: West Texas Therapy will present a balance and fall-prevention class Monday, while Natural Grocers will host a heart-health event Tuesday. A fresh-milled grains class is scheduled Friday at Twelve Gate Coffee Company.
- After-hours mammograms: An after-hours mammogram event will run from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Legends Park Medical.
