What to watch: The Special Olympics Texas Fall Classic returns to Midland/Odessa on Oct. 2–4. Organizers are seeking volunteers in various roles to support the athletes and make the event possible. Attendance is free and open to the public.

Why it matters: This organization provides athletes with intellectual disabilities a platform to compete across Texas in multiple sporting events. The citywide event invites the community to celebrate their achievements, build new connections, and provide hands-on support to the competition.

The big picture: The Fall Classic is an annual statewide tournament featuring athletes competing in swimming, golf, bocce, FUNdamental sports, and softball. Competitions will take place at the Basin Sports Complex in Odessa and other locations to be determined. At last year’s event, Tim Martin, CEO of Special Olympics Texas, expressed his gratitude for the partnership with Midland and Odessa. He appreciated the opportunity to enjoy West Texas’s beauty and hospitality, which provided athletes a memorable experience to connect with friends and exceed expectations.

Go deeper: Volunteering with Special Olympics Texas is a great experience for everyone. Bring your kids, neighbors, coworkers, and more to help create an exceptional competition for these athletes. Anyone under 15 must be accompanied by an adult. Volunteer roles are available in several areas. See details and register here: Special Olympics Texas Fall Classic volunteer portal.
