What to know: Bryce Hoppel is one of the greatest athletes ever produced by Midland, rising from a Midland High state champion to an American record holder, world champion, and Olympic finalist in the 800 meters.

The big picture: Hoppel’s rise began at Midland High, where he developed into one of the top middle-distance runners in Texas. Originally involved in soccer and baseball, Hoppel transitioned into track during high school and quickly emerged as a state contender. After finishing second at the UIL 6A state meet, Hoppel returned during his senior season to win the 800-meter state championship in 1:49.67 while setting a Midland High School record.

Sports were already deeply rooted in the Hoppel family. His father, Monty Hoppel, has long served as general manager of the Midland RockHounds, while his sister, Kelsey Hoppel, played on Lubbock Christian University’s undefeated national championship basketball team.

Hoppel later signed with the University of Kansas, where he rapidly developed into one of the nation’s top middle-distance runners. As a junior at Kansas, Hoppel won both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor 800-meter national championships while putting together a 21-race winning streak that launched him onto the professional stage.

After qualifying for his first World Championships in 2019, Hoppel finished fourth in the world championship final in Doha. Months later, he won his first senior national title at the 2020 USATF Indoor Championships. Hoppel earned a bronze medal at the 2022 World Athletics Indoor Championships before winning both U.S. indoor and outdoor national titles in 2023.

The biggest season of his career came in 2024, when Hoppel won gold at the World Athletics Indoor Championships before dominating the U.S. Olympic Trials with a 1:42.77. At the Paris Olympics, he finished fourth in the world while setting a new American record of 1:41.67.

What’s next: Hoppel remains one of the top 800-meter runners in the world and is expected to compete in major events this year, including the USATF Outdoor Championships, Prefontaine Classic, Millrose Games, and LA Track Festival while building toward future World Championship and Olympic opportunities.

For Midland, Hoppel’s rise from Midland High state champion to American record holder remains one of the city’s greatest athletic success stories.
