Editor’s note: Midland College releases Board of Trustees meeting minutes in the agenda packet for the following meeting. As a result, The Permian Press received the Aug. 25 minutes in the Sept. 15 meeting agenda.

What happened: Midland College trustees met on Monday, Aug. 25, and canceled the November trustee election after certifying all candidates as running unopposed, and voted to consider purchasing property known as the “Boneyard” from Midland ISD.

Key points:

  • Boneyard proposal: Trustees voted unanimously to consider purchasing property from Midland ISD known as the “Boneyard.” No price, location, or further details were disclosed in open session. The land has not been sold yet. The item means the board approved Midland College to begin negotiations with MISD.
  • Election canceled: Trustees voted unanimously to certify all candidates for the Nov. 3 trustee election as unopposed, then voted unanimously to cancel the election. Under Texas Election Code Chapter 2, a political subdivision may cancel its portion of an election when no candidate faces opposition. The unopposed candidates are then declared elected to their terms.

Canceling the election also eliminates the cost the college would have paid to hold its share of the November vote.

Four candidates filed for Board of Trustees Places 3, 7, 8, and 9, and none drew an opponent, according to a college announcement. The candidates included Jacobe Kendrick (Place 3), Adrian Carrasco (Place 7), Scott Lynch (Place 8), and Kelsie Rasure (Place 9). Kendrick, Carrasco, and Lynch are sitting trustees. Rasure would replace Trustee Scott Kidwell, who is not seeking re-election.
