What happened: Greenwood went 3–1 at the Andrews Tournament from Thursday, Dec. 11, through Saturday, Dec. 13, finishing third overall. The Rangers set the tone Thursday with a dominant opening-round win against Snyder, followed by a hard-earned victory Friday morning against Corpus Christi’s Tuloso-Midway that required poise down the stretch.
Greenwood’s lone setback came later Friday in a tight contest against Levelland that swung multiple times, but the Rangers responded Saturday with a balanced performance against Kermit to close the tournament on a high note. Greenwood was led by Colton Rauman and Jonathan Mendoza in scoring, with additional contributions from Weston Turnage, Noah Rivas, Ethan Rybolt, and Austin Snodgrass.
The big picture:
- Game 1: Greenwood 65, Snyder 33
Greenwood controlled the game from the opening tip, pulling away early and never letting Snyder (1-11 overall) find rhythm in a 65–33 win. The Rangers jumped out quickly behind three-pointers from Weston Turnage and Jonathan Mendoza, building an 18–5 first-quarter lead and extending the margin to 32–13 by halftime through balanced scoring and steady defensive pressure.
The decisive stretch came in the third quarter, when Trip Legendre caught fire from the perimeter, knocking down multiple three-pointers to push the lead past 30 and put the game out of reach. Greenwood continued to rotate efficiently in the fourth, with contributions from Colton Rauman, Noah Rivas, Ethan Rybolt, and Austin Snodgrass to close out the win. Snyder was led by Michael Escobedo, Jayden Sandoval, and Aedyn Claxton.
- Game 2: Greenwood 54, Tuloso-Midway 50
Greenwood pulled out a hard-fought 54–50 win over Tuloso-Midway (6-8 overall) in a back-and-forth contest that came down to execution in the final minutes. The Rangers built an early edge behind strong perimeter shooting from Colton Rauman, Jonathan Mendoza, and Samuel Saenz, carrying a 23–13 lead into halftime.
Tuloso-Midway responded in the third quarter by attacking the paint and drawing fouls, cutting the deficit to 35–29 entering the fourth. The final period featured multiple lead changes as Rashon Clay and Nathan Avalos pushed Tuloso-Midway back even, tying the game at 45–45 with two minutes left. Greenwood answered with a key basket from Noah Rivas, then sealed the win at the free-throw line behind Rauman and Rivas.
- Game 3: Levelland 61, Greenwood 56
Greenwood dropped a tight 61–56 decision to Levelland (12-2 overall) in a game that swung multiple times and stayed within one or two possessions deep into the fourth. The Rangers started fast behind Colton Rauman and Weston Turnage, then traded runs through a 29–29 halftime tie as Anthony Gonzalez and Bentley Supulbeda answered for Levelland.
Greenwood regained momentum early in the third with a three from Jonathan Mendoza and continued scoring from Rauman, but Levelland’s mid-quarter surge flipped the game and put the Rangers in a 49–46 hole entering the fourth. Greenwood briefly pulled even at 52–52 after an Austin Snodgrass three and an Ethan Rybolt bucket, and later tied it again at 55–55 on a Rauman finish.
Levelland responded immediately with late baskets from Graham Gibbs and Bryson Golightly, then iced it at the line in the final minute to escape with the five-point win.
- Game 4: Greenwood 61, Kermit 47
Greenwood closed the weekend with a 61–47 win over Kermit (7-5 overall), using a big second-quarter run to break open a game that was tight early. The Rangers hit first with a Jonathan Mendoza three, but Kermit answered with baskets from Julian Chavez, Ethan Quiroz, Mario Perez, and Keaton Thomas to briefly take an 8–7 lead. Greenwood steadied behind Samuel Saenz at the end of the quarter, then turned the momentum in the second with a burst of perimeter shooting. Mendoza buried multiple threes and Noah Rivas added another to push the lead to 29–20 at halftime. After the break, Greenwood kept attacking the paint and finishing possessions, with Weston Turnage and Colton Rauman extending the margin while Mendoza continued to score in rhythm. Andrick Rodriguez chipped in during the third, and Greenwood carried a 45–30 advantage into the fourth. From there, the Rangers protected the lead with timely scores from Rauman, Turnage, and Austin Snodgrass, while Kermit got late buckets from Thomas, Perez, Armando Urias, and Quiroz. Greenwood’s balance and shot-making, especially Mendoza’s perimeter punch, carried the Rangers to the 14-point win.
What’s next: Greenwood will face Snyder (1–11) again on Tuesday, Dec. 16, at 7:30 p.m.
