What happened: The No. 15-ranked softball team across Texas, the Midland Lady Bulldogs (33-3 overall), carried a 17-game winning streak into the UIL Class 6A softball playoffs with a dominant bi-district sweep over El Paso Montwood (17-20-1 overall), winning the first game 7-6 and the second game 11-0, to advance to the Region I-6A area round. Midland faces a tougher area opponent tonight against No. 18-ranked Byron Nelson.

The big picture: Midland set the tone early in the first game, holding Montwood scoreless through the first three innings while building a steady lead. After two innings, the Lady Bulldogs led 2-0, extended it to 3-0 by the third, and held on late to secure a 7-6 win in a competitive opener.

In the second game, Midland took complete control from the start. The Lady Bulldogs jumped ahead early, built a 5-0 lead by the second inning, and never allowed Montwood to settle in. By the fourth inning, Midland had stretched the lead to 8-0 before closing out an 11-0 shutout to complete the sweep.
