Rangers cap 13–1 season with district title, quarterfinal berth
What happened: The Rangers completed a strong 13-1 season, going undefeated in district play, claiming the District 1-4A Division II championship, and advancing through three rounds of the playoff bracket before finally falling to the No. 21-ranked team in all of Texas, Brock, in the quarterfinal round.
Greenwood opened district play with a 48–7 win at Monahans (1-10 overall). They next defeated Fort Stockton (6-5 overall) 56–7, Seminole (9-4 overall) 10–3, and Snyder (0-10 overall) 67–35, finishing 10–0.
In the playoffs, Greenwood started strong with a 59–20 win over Perryton (4-7 overall). Afterward, they defeated Eagle Mountain (8-4 overall) 58–13 and Graham (9-4 overall) 36–21 to reach the quarterfinals. However, their season ended with a 35–14 loss to Brock (14-0 overall) on Friday, Dec. 5, in Abilene. Greenwood averaged 46.2 points per game while allowing just 13.5.
Go deeper: Offensively, they relied on running backs junior Reece Watzl, senior Nathaniel Romero, and senior Mason Lee, as well as senior receivers Joey Vasquez, Dylan Payton, and Kasen Brooks. Senior linemen Kade Foster, Erick Bustamante, and Darby Whitaker anchored both lines. In addition, senior quarterback Lincoln Madrid directed the offense efficiently throughout the season.
