What to watch: Lace up your sneakers and sport the signature purple. Midland’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s takes place Saturday, Oct. 25. Hosted at Scharbauer Sports Complex, the event unites families, caregivers, and community teams for a morning of purposeful walking.

Why it matters: Alzheimer’s disease currently affects over 6 million Americans. With every step, walkers support the Alzheimer’s Association West Texas Chapter’s mission: “to lead the way to end Alzheimer’s and all other dementias.” The West Texas Chapter provides essential programs such as caregiver support groups, educational workshops, and a 24-hour helpline that serves families facing Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

The big picture: As Midland’s largest Alzheimer’s fundraiser, this walk provides a way to participate in raising funds and awareness. The signature Promise Garden ceremony features vibrant pinwheel flowers, each representing a different connection to the cause. Teams often bring decorated signs, matching shirts, and photos of loved ones, creating a powerful visual tribute throughout the route. Friendly dogs on leashes are welcome, and volunteers line the course with cheers and encouragement.

Go deeper: Check in for the walk begins at 9 a.m., followed by the opening ceremony at 10 a.m. and concluding around 12:30 p.m. Each donation fuels research and care that bring families closer to a world without Alzheimer’s. Admission is free, and participants can register online here.
