How Midland youth baseball works: MJBA and Little League
What to watch: Midland’s youth baseball system begins with the Midland Junior Baseball Association (MJBA), a volunteer-run nonprofit that organizes leagues for players ages 4 to 16 throughout the city.
Why it matters: MJBA serves as the backbone of youth baseball in Midland. The organization runs citywide T-Ball and Fall Ball programs and supports the four local Little Leagues, Eastern, Mid-City, Northern, and Tower, which provide organized play for older age groups.
According to league leaders, MJBA focuses on more than just baseball. The organization aims to teach sportsmanship, honesty, loyalty, and respect while helping young athletes grow into confident and responsible members of the community.
The big picture: Many Midland players begin in T-Ball, which serves children ages 4 to 6. Unlike older divisions, T-Ball operates as a citywide program rather than following Little League boundaries. Games typically take place Monday through Thursday at Butler Park or Reyes–Mashburn–Nelms Park, while volunteer coaches schedule practices at local parks throughout Midland.
Players ages 7 to 12 then move into one of Midland’s four Little League programs. Because Little League International sets geographic boundaries, players must register with the league that serves their home area. Within Little League, players progress through divisions based on age and skill. Younger players often begin with coach pitch before advancing to the Texas League, which introduces kid pitch.
From there, players typically move into American League and National League divisions. Before teams are finalized each season, players attend evaluations where coaches observe their skills. Teams are then drafted to help maintain balanced competition across the league.
Baseball opportunities continue for players ages 13 to 16 through Intermediate, Junior and Senior League divisions. These levels use larger field dimensions and help prepare athletes for high school baseball.
Go deeper: MJBA hosts two seasons annually. Spring registration typically opens around Dec. 1, with games beginning between February and April and running through Memorial Day weekend. Fall registration usually opens around June 1, with games played from mid-September through late October.
