What happened: While it may not have been as big as initially expected, Midland welcomed a rare blanket of winter weather this past weekend. Families around town bundled up for snow angels, snowball fights, and sledding, and readers sent in their highlights from a winter weekend that doesn’t come around often in West Texas. For a city that rarely sees snow, even a few inches was enough to create memorable moments across Midland.

The big picture: Snow, sleet, and freezing temperatures moved into the area Friday night, Jan. 23, and lingered through Sunday, Jan. 25, turning the city into a brief winter wonderland. The National Weather Service reported about 3 inches of snow accumulation citywide by Sunday, far less than early predictions of up to 9 inches, but still an exciting snowfall for West Texas.

As temperatures begin to rise slowly and the snow melts away, the storm left behind an extra-long weekend of fun for kids and plenty of photos capturing Midland’s first true winter snowfall since 2021.
