Rebels outlasts Bulldogs in crosstown overtime thriller

What happened: Legacy edged Midland 57–52 in overtime in a district crosstown showdown Friday, Jan. 16. The rivalry matchup reportedly drew a crowd of at least 1,000 and delivered a back-and-forth finish that lived up to a classic Rebel–Bulldog matchup. The win pushed the Rebels to 7–14 overall and 1–0 in district play, while the Bulldogs fell to 8–16 overall and 0–1 in district.
Tristine Turner led the Rebels with 17 points, followed by Kobe Johnson with 11. Caden Martin paced the Bulldogs with 18 points on six 3-pointers, while Isaac Lujan added 12 and MJ Washington finished with 11.
The big picture: Legacy struck first, building a 17–13 lead after the first quarter behind early scoring from Kobe Johnson, Tristine Turner, and Conley Lewis. Midland responded in the second quarter, erupting for 22 points to take a 35–29 halftime advantage, fueled by multiple 3-pointers from Caden Martin and strong interior play from Isaac Lujan and MJ Washington.
The Bulldogs extended the lead early in the third, but Legacy tightened defensively and began chipping away. The Rebels outscored Midland 12–8 in the period, cutting the deficit to 43–41 entering the fourth.
Midland briefly regained control in the final quarter, pushing the lead to four on multiple occasions. Legacy answered each time. After Washington gave Midland a 50–48 edge with under a minute remaining, Turner tied the game at 50–50 to force overtime.
In the extra period, Legacy seized control at the free-throw line. Turner opened overtime scoring, Ja’Braylen Anders added a key basket, and Johnson converted five late free throws as the Rebels closed out the rivalry win.
