Lady Mustangs pull away late to beat Coram Deo, 4-0 in district
What happened: Midland Christian earned a 52–31 district win over Flower Mound’s Coram Deo on Thursday, Jan. 8. The victory moved the Lady Mustangs to 20–6 overall and 4–0 in district play, while Coram Deo fell to 13–5 overall and 2–2 in district. Lauren Alvizo led Midland Christian with 16 points, including three 3-pointers, while Jordan Stokes added 14. Selah Johnson paced Coram Deo with 15 points.
The big picture: Midland Christian worked through a slow start but held an 8–5 lead after the first quarter, with points coming at the free-throw line from Mallory West, Alvizo, and Stokes. Coram Deo took a 20–18 lead into halftime after a strong second quarter, but Midland Christian began to find rhythm through paint touches from Alvizo and Stokes, with post player Jordyn Hamilton scoring inside during a six-point stretch.
After the break, Midland Christian regained control. Alvizo opened the third quarter with the first 3-pointer of the game from the top of the key, followed by a basket in the paint and another 3-pointer. Stokes and Hamilton added paint scores as Midland Christian moved in front 31–26 entering the fourth.
The Lady Mustangs closed the game with a decisive fourth quarter, outscoring Coram Deo 21–5 as Alvizo hit a corner 3, Stokes scored twice in the paint, and Selah Fox added eight points to put the game away.
