What happened: Midland Christian earned an 81–15 district win over Fort Worth Christian on Friday, Jan. 9. The victory moved the Lady Mustangs to 21–6 overall and 5–0 in district play, while the Lady Cardinals fell to 4–15 overall and 0–4 in district. The night also marked a milestone for head coach Katie Osborn, who earned her 100th career victory.
Lauren Alvizo led the way with a career-high 21 points. Meanwhile, Selah Fox added 17. Addi Tatsch scored 14, and Jordan Stokes finished with 10.
The big picture: Midland Christian jumped out early, holding Fort Worth Christian to one point in the opening quarter while building a 26–1 lead. The Lady Mustangs maintained that intensity in the second quarter, scoring from both the paint and the perimeter to carry a 52–5 advantage into halftime. Midland Christian stayed in control after the break, extending the margin to 67–10 by the end of the third quarter before closing out the district win.
Go deeper: Osborn reflected on the significance of the milestone victory, emphasizing personal growth and the lessons she learned from those around her. She said her willingness to keep learning from other coaches has shaped her coaching philosophy over the years. When asked how last year’s state championship changed her expectations, Osborn said it reinforced her focus rather than altering it.
“The expectation is to always stay focused, even when days are really hard, and to keep the fire of wanting to get another state title,” she said.
Osborn said her priorities go beyond wins and losses, adding that “the ability to care about the person next to you more than yourself” is a value she works hardest to instill in her players. Regarding her next goals, she said she approaches each game step by step.
“Take it one game at a time, striving for a district championship, then a regional championship, and finally another state championship,” she said. “Whether it’s 100 wins or 100 losses, it’s an opportunity to be around these kids and build relationships using the talents that the Lord has given me.”
The night also included a surprise visit from former player Trinity Galloway, one of Coach Osborn’s first athletes, who traveled with her family from Big Spring to Fort Worth to celebrate the milestone.
What they’re saying: Junior point guard Selah Fox said, “I think this highly reflects her character and her commitment to us girls. She’s an incredibly selfless person, and I’m very proud. No one else deserves this more than Coach Osborn.”
“Playing for Coach Osborn has completely shifted the way that I perceive life,” senior post player Addi Tatsch said. “I’ve learned to be more focused on others instead of myself. She’s the best woman role model I’ve ever met, and I’ll always cherish the relationship I’ve built with her.”
Senior guard Mallory West highlighted one lesson she’ll carry beyond high school. “She’s taught me to think like a goldfish. Whenever you make a mistake, just move on to the next thing. Everyone makes mistakes, and I shouldn’t be hard on myself. She makes me reach my full potential.”
“What makes Coach Osborn such a great role model is that her wins represent far more than victories on a scoreboard,” assistant coach Ashley Brinker said. “They represent countless hours of preparation, tough conversations, belief in players, and an unwavering commitment to doing this the right way. She’s the leader of our team who helps build confidence, character, and trust, and I truly believe we’re all better for having the chance to coach and play alongside her.”
