What to watch: Tall City Black Gold returns home Sunday, June 21, looking for its first regular-season victory as the Midland-based professional football team hosts the San Angelo-based Texas Herd at 7 p.m. at Astound Broadband Stadium, 801 N. Loop 250 W. Tall City Black Gold competes in the Continental Football League, a developmental professional outdoor football league.
The game marks the fourth week of the league’s inaugural season, which gives local football fans an opportunity to watch professional football without leaving Midland. After opening the season with a bye, Tall City dropped its first two regular-season games, falling 23-20 to the Pflugerville-based Texas Syndicate and 59-0 to the San Antonio Toros.
The big picture: Several Tall City Black Gold players have direct ties to the Permian Basin, including former University of Texas Permian Basin defensive backs Dami Oluwoleajayi and Coby Calvin, as well as native Midlanders Caleb Washington and Guillermo Hernandez.
Midland City Councilman John Norman, a former Midland Lee and Texas Tech football player, co-founded Tall City Black Gold with his brother, former NFL cornerback Josh Norman. According to the league, the brothers launched the franchise to bring professional football back to the Permian Basin and to create opportunities for players after college.
Go deeper: Sunday’s matchup begins the second half of the six-game regular season. Following the regular season, qualifying teams advance to the Southern Division Championship, with division winners moving on to compete for the CoFL championship.
What’s next: Tickets, the full season schedule, and additional team information are available through the Tall City Black Gold website.
