What happened: Greenwood football opened 2025 in style Friday night, rolling to a 42-21 home win over the Childress Bobcats. The victory marked the 300th in program history since 1980.
Quarterback Lincoln Madrid accounted for three touchdowns, rushing for two and throwing for two more. He connected with receiver Dylan Payton on scoring passes of 57 and 47 yards. Payton finished with 113 yards on three catches, all resulting in first downs or touchdowns.
Running back Nathaniel Romero powered the ground game with 144 yards, including a 65-yard touchdown sprint. The defense also made its mark when sophomore Andrick Rodriguez returned an interception 75 yards for a score.
The Rangers built a 35-7 halftime lead and stretched it to 42-7 in the third quarter. With reserves in late, Childress added two touchdowns to narrow the final margin.
Greenwood (1-0) faces a tough road test at Sweetwater on Sept. 5. The Mustangs have won the last two meetings, including a 29-25 thriller last season.
